Smart Golden Portfolio MT5 Review: Backtests, Signal & Buyer Feedback

Smart Golden Portfolio MT5 trades XAUUSD with selective buy/sell entries, configurable position limits and several account protection controls. Barbaros Bulent Kortarla presents it as an alternative to breakout and scalping EAs, with no grid or martingale. Its appeal is the combination of adjustable exposure and less frequent trading. The main reservation is evidence: the public live account had only two closed trades at our check.

Our view: an interesting option to research if you want a different gold strategy from the developer’s Hunter and Impulse products. The published tests deserve examination, but the small live sample and early customer feedback do not yet establish durability. This review assesses public material; it is not a claim that we independently traded or reproduced the EA.

How Smart Golden Portfolio works

The official listing describes a gold system with both buy and sell permission enabled by default, using M30 as its standard internal timeframe. The selected input timeframe governs the logic even if the chart is set differently. Buy-only and sell-only modes are optional, as is permission for a second position.

The developer explicitly distinguishes the approach from breakout and scalping. However, the public description does not disclose a sufficiently detailed entry formula to classify it confidently as a specific indicator or mean-reversion system. We would not add those labels simply because its trades last longer than a typical scalp.

According to the author, the core was developed before 2025 and selected from a much larger strategy pool. That development history is his account, not an independently documented forward test. Selecting from thousands of candidates also makes out-of-sample and subsequent live performance relevant; a strong selected historical curve alone cannot settle that question.

Stops, trailing and exposure controls

The description discusses earlier stop and target distances of roughly 2,000 and 4,000 points, followed by a slightly wider stop and a more distant target with trailing beginning around 5,000 favourable points. These are developer explanations of management changes, not universal broker-independent distances. Point values depend on the instrument’s quote format, and the current inputs should be checked before trading.

An internal exit may act before the visible stop or take profit. Consequently, a nominal target-to-stop ratio is not the same as the realised average win-to-loss ratio. The account’s eventual trade distribution matters more than an attractive ratio in isolation.

Fixed lots, lot-per-$1,000 sizing and percentage risk per trade offer different ways of scaling. Daily loss protection, daily drawdown protection, equity protection and optional close-all behaviour provide additional controls. A second position still adds exposure even if it is not a grid or recovery order. Likewise, buy-only mode is a directional preference, not a way to eliminate gold losses.

The live signal: a promising start with almost no sample

The developer links Smart Golden Portfolio on MQL5 Signals. It is identified as a real MT5 account on ICMarketsSC-MT5-3 with 1:500 leverage. The visible record began on 1 September 2026; the page displayed one week of history at our check. The named broker/server provides useful context, but does not validate the strategy or ensure another account receives identical fills.

Growth and profit
6.83%; $51.23 net profit.
Account value
$750 initial deposit; $801.23 balance and equity. No additional deposits or withdrawals shown.
Closed trades
Two winning XAUUSD trades, one buy and one sell, across one trading day.
Holding period
Four hours average.
Observed drawdown
1.00% relative equity drawdown ($7.47); 0% relative balance drawdown.

The distinction between equity and balance drawdown matters: a balance curve can show no drawdown while trades experience floating losses. Neither figure is a future loss ceiling. Two winners also provide no meaningful estimate of a sustainable win rate or loss size; the profit factor is unavailable because there are no closed losing trades in this sample.

MQL5 warns that the deal count is too small to evaluate trading quality and that trading days are concentrated. We agree with that limitation. The right next evidence would be a larger sequence that includes losing periods, not extrapolating the opening 6.83% across future weeks or months.

Two backtests, two risk settings

The listing supplies two historical graphics covering 17 January 2020 to 31 August 2026, each labelled with a $300 starting balance and 99% history quality. These are developer-supplied presentations. We have not independently rerun the tests, and a history-quality label does not prove realistic future execution or resistance to overfitting.

Developer backtest: 0.01 fixed lot, January 2020–August 2026. Original graphic retained.
Developer backtest: 0.01 fixed lot, January 2020–August 2026. Original graphic retained.

The fixed-lot graphic reports $2,187.37 net profit, a 1.71 profit factor and 634 trades. It lists 282 profitable trades (44.48%) and 352 losing trades (55.52%). The maximum relative equity drawdown is 21.05%, distinct from the 9.67% shown beside the maximum monetary equity drawdown. Those are different drawdown measurements, so quoting only the smaller percentage would be misleading.

Developer backtest: 5% risk per trade, January 2020–August 2026. The win/loss percentage labels are inconsistent with the counts.
Developer backtest: 5% risk per trade, January 2020–August 2026. The win/loss percentage labels are inconsistent with the counts.

The percentage-risk graphic reports $5,941.74 net profit, a 1.58 profit factor and 30.73% relative equity drawdown. Its larger profit comes with greater drawdown, and 5% risk per trade can produce substantial cumulative losses. It should not be read as our recommended risk setting.

There is also a presentation issue: the graphic lists 304 winners and 330 losers out of 634 trades, but prints 38.49% and 50.00%. Those counts imply approximately 47.95% and 52.05%. We retain the original image and flag the mismatch rather than treating its printed percentages as verified. Obtaining the underlying tester report would help resolve it.

What the two MQL5 customers say

Both visible reviews were posted on 13 September and gave five stars. wymtb says trades on ICMarkets and Ultima Markets matched the author’s signal after testing, while noting that the EA does not trade every day. May KIM reports low trade volume with profitable closed positions and expresses confidence in the developer.

That feedback supports the expectation of quiet periods and offers an early user report about execution matching. It does not yet establish stable performance over different market conditions. Both comments are very recent, and positive experiences over a few trades can coexist with substantial future losses. Read the full MQL5 reviews for their original context. No public product comments or linked public manual were available at our check.

Setup and who it may suit

The developer states that default inputs do not require an external set file and supports standard, RAW/ECN and cent accounts, including gold symbol prefixes and suffixes. Before using any account, check contract size, minimum lot and the monetary exposure of its settings. The stated $300 minimum is a starting recommendation, not evidence that every configuration is suitable for a small balance.

The high-impact USD news filter and Friday controls can help define when the EA operates. They do not remove gaps, slippage or broker execution differences. The author positions it as less execution-dependent than very short-term systems; that remains a comparative claim rather than proof of identical broker results. Anyone considering a funded account must separately check that firm’s current rules.

Smart Gold Hunter and Smart Gold Impulse

Yes: the same author also developed Smart Gold Hunter MT5 and Smart Gold Impulse MT5, both available here. Portfolio’s stated non-breakout, non-scalping approach gives it a different role to investigate. It should not inherit those products’ reviews, signals or track records.

You can also read our Smart Gold Hunter review and Smart Gold Impulse review. Combining several XAUUSD robots still concentrates exposure in gold; different names and entry logic do not guarantee low correlation.

Verdict

Smart Golden Portfolio offers a useful range of sizing, direction and protection controls, plus historical tests that show both returns and meaningful drawdowns. The early live account and buyer comments are positive but far too small to substantiate a long-term recommendation. We would judge it on how a larger live sample develops, including losing trades, and seek clarification of the inconsistent backtest percentage labels.
